A December Beach Vacation

I wasn’t sure what a beach vacation would look like in December when we planned this trip out last March. Will it rain the whole time? Will it be cold? Will there still be a lingering chance of hurricanes? We planned it anyway. I felt pretty confident come November that our vacation timing was still a good idea as I saw Facebook friends posting pictures of their family vacations on the Gulf Coast in November. Were we disappointed? No.

Turns out spending the first week of December on the beach isn’t a bad vacation at all. If you are expecting 80 degree weather the whole time, or maybe even weather in the 70s, you might want to plan your trip during a warmer month. We had mid 60s most days with almost 70 degrees one day. And I did have to go to Walmart to get a pair of warmer pajama pants to wear while lounging on the back deck, because what I took was not warm enough for those early mornings or late nights outside. Once the day got on, shorts were fine and we even had two great days of sitting on the beach in swimsuits. Don’t ask me how warm the water was though, cause I only got my feet wet. Stephen went in and according to him it was on the cooler side.

Back in March when I booked the trip, I didn’t even know how perfect this place was going to be. We wanted a beachfront house with a deck and this place was perfect. It was set back closer to the sea than any of the other houses around us. The deck was wonderful and there was so much room inside. We were very comfortable and really spent most all of our time outside on that deck. We woke up and walked straight out the bedroom door to watch the sunrise every morning, and saw it set almost every night. And at any time we could just walk down the deck stairs and be on the beach. It was such a great place! I have it saved and I have a feeling we will definitely be going back.

We stayed at Fort Morgan Beach, Alabama and part of the draw to stay here opposed to Orange Beach or Gulf Shores, besides not wanting to be in a condo this time, was that the beaches here are dog friendly. The pups actually got to walk on the beach and feel the gulf sea on their paws. Aspen liked the water way more than Daisy. Daisy preferred the sand and enjoyed getting to dig. It was a great trip for all of us!

Seven days flew by. We ate some great food, did just enough shopping, and tried to go on a sunset dolphin cruise twice. It seems boating excursions are harder to come by this time of the year. The colder weather does affect the turn out, and both evenings we tried to go didn’t have enough passengers to make either trip possible. I think next year we will try for the early part of November or even the end of October. But we have always preferred our vacations to be taken during down times for everyone else. So, all in all, our December beach vacation was wonderful!

I am sure hoping for a travel filled 2024. 2023 was a great year for little trips, and I am hoping to keep that up into the new year! Have a great one, everybody! ❤
