I don’t usually follow the theme of, Everyone else is doing it so why don’t I, unless it has to do with a cactus dress, it seems. I grew up around sage brush and cactus, but never really liked them until I moved away. I miss the desert sometimes, and I kind of really like cacti now. Homesickness, or growing older? Hmm, maybe both.

My social media channels of choice have been flooded with all prints cactus these days and I couldn’t help but jump on the bandwagon. My dressmaking wheels really started rolling when I saw this beauty that Lipstick, Lettuce & Lycra wore from Collectif. I know, I could have probably bought my own, but I like the idea of making my own sometimes a little more.
To be more of a copycat, I should have gone with this one of Gertie’s on the right and made it with top tie straps and a circle skirt. Instead, I went with my tried and true boutique dress with the thought that I’d list one like it for sale on my Etsy page also.
No worries, I bought lots of cactus fabric so should I decide to, I can make another one more like my inspiration in the near future. In the meantime, here’s what I made.
I added a little bit more details than usual with this one. I’d like to one day make this dress using some piping at the waistband, but when I found some red ruffly ribbon, I thought it would do well instead. I had this red metal zipper that I couldn’t wait to use and it was perfect for it. I inserted it differently, totally on top, and it’s just the look I was going for. It’s a completely exposed metal zipper.
And there are pockets, of course. I don’t think I will ever not put pockets in a dress I make again.
And now I have my very own cactus dress, just like everyone else.
The End.

Very interesting to see a zipper sewn on like that. Never thought zipper could be a detail on a dress! 🙂

I really like exposed zippers! I’ve done a few but never with the whole thing showing. Metal zippers are the best for showing off. Thanks for your comment.
