What else could I possibly do to fill my time? Plenty really, but since there is a new vineyard growing on the family property, why not learn how to make wine? What a great idea! The vines are several years away from producing a crop big enough to bottle, and in the mean time I should be learning all I can, but skipping ahead sounded much better for the moment; let’s get right into the wine-making so we can see what we have to look forward to!
I really know nothing at all about the wine business, and am totally learning as I go. I just found out that you don’t even need to crush grapes to make your own wine. (All those visions I had of stomping around in a big barrel…) Nope, you can buy a kit. Just a really large, and heavy, box of juice – kind of like several Black Box Wines all packaged together, only without the alcohol. Then, some additives that will help with the fermenting process, and all of the storage, testing, and siphoning equipment. That’s it, that is all you need to make your own, homemade wine. No personal vineyard necessary and no running around in a wine vat, I Love Lucy style.
Step two of four was completed this week and there is about a month to go before I am able to say that the first attempt was a success. I say no personal vineyard necessary, but really that is gonna make it all the more fun and it is what I am looking forward to. I can’t wait until the wine that will be made comes completely from our own field. Forget growing chickens, I might rather grow wine! At least by then, we should have some idea of what it is we are doing. 🙂
Cheers to a great weekend!
my parents make wine! I’ve helped with several parts of it, but have never made it from start to finish….it’s on my list of things to do though!

My neighbor makes it and his is the only homemade wine that I have tried. I have read that it can be some of the best tasting wine. Hope you get a chance to try it out yourself.

Absolutely! Now only if there was a way to skip straight to the bottling process. 🙂

So great! Check out homemade honey wine too… it’s really interesting and you can maek it on the cheap if you have a bulk honey guy 🙂 If you have the patience for it, it seems it would definitely be rewarding to make your own wine! Interested to know how your first attempt comes out
